A Tip for Making Shit Happen

There are any number of things you can do to make shit happen – that is to say, to be productive – and one of the major things I’ve learned that is the most helpful is this:

DRESS THE PART

Feeling successful and feeling confident helps you be more productive.

Don’t say, “when I get there [where ever it is you see yourself being when you’re successful] I’ll dress that way,” or

“I don’t have to get all dressed up, I’m not there yet.”

Take every opportunity to BE the person you think about becoming.

When I was working from home one of the things I made sure to do was get up in the morning, take a shower, put work clothes on, and then sit down at my desk in my living room. I wasn’t going to see anyone, or attend any meetings but I felt better, I did more.

Try it with me. Plan your clothes for the next few days. Who do you see when you think about being successful or productive? Are you in our pajama bottoms with a hoodie, or are you in a nice pair of jeans and a trendy sweater, or maybe it’s slacks and a button up shirt? It doesn’t matter if you don’t intend to leave your house – wear the clothes, and let them dictate what you will do for the day.

5 Ways to Improve Your Happiness at Work

1. Do Your Part

Stop thinking it’s beneath you to do the menial tasks – there is someone who in your organization that believes the task is not menial, it is hard work to them.  My boss made a comment to me the other day about another co-worker, “quite frankly, she’s paid too much to be doing that.” Pay should not determine workload. We all need to be willing to do what we can when we can.

2. Keep It Clean

Much like “Do Your Part” above, you can’t leave it all up to someone else. If you have an employee kitchen or communal break space and you notice it’s dirty – clean it up. Think about it this way, “Do not put off doing anything that takes 60 seconds or less to do.” (And in most cases – a quick wipe down of the counter takes way less than 60 seconds)

3. Big Brother

You’ve seen that show right? Where people live in a house and for weeks are filmed every minute of every day? Nothing they do goes unnoticed? When you write an email, pretend your boss will be able to read it. When talking in the break room, imagine a camera just off in the distance. Act as if someone’s watching.   

4. Tap Out

This one is important on many levels, but few utilize its benefit. So often we’re afraid that asking for help or saying no displays laziness. But, ask yourself: “isn’t it better to do a few things really well, than to do too many things half-ass?” I think the answer is yes. So, when you are overwhelmed and the quality of your work is starting to suffer – tap out, say no, ask for help.

5. Accept Accidents & Mistakes

We all make mistakes; we’re human, but how often is the assumption that the mistakes and accidents made by co-workers are on purpose?  We all have times when – even though we know what we’re doing – we are too rushed, or maybe we’re confused by the situation. Allow your co-workers the benefit of the doubt, accept their mistakes as mistakes.

Success Begins With Imagination

My wife thinks “dreaming about things” is nonessential. She’s a doer rather than a dreamer. And I love that about her; we make a great team because sometimes I get far too caught up in the dreaming…

I know a lot of people like my wife: a bit of a skeptic, quick to point out the reality of any situation and even quicker to argue that “hard work is much more valuable than dreams.” I don’t believe hard work is any more valuable, but I’d go as far as to say equally beneficial.

Yes, we need to take action but what action do we take if we don’t know what we want? More simply, what road do we take if we don’t know where we’re going?

1989-RandMcNallyDo you remember those old Rand McNally Road Atlas books that your grandparents would keep in the car for all those boring road trips you’d go on (or maybe you’re too young – if you are, they were what we had before GPS)?

If my grandparents and I were going somewhere my grandpa would insist that I tell him what roads he needed, so I had to learn how to read one early on. He’d say, “we’re going to make our first stop in Medford, [OR] – tell me how to get there,” and he’d point to where we were on the Washington State Map, “we’re here. Now, show me you know where we’re going.” I’d have to open to the state of Oregon and point to Medford so he knew that I knew.

Believing in your imagination, and dreaming about who, or what you want to be, helps counter the doubt too!

why?I highly doubt Walt Disney ever said things like, “that’s not reality,” or “that will never happen,” or “that’s not how the world works.” He’d say, “Why not?”

When Russell Wilson was interviewed prior to his second appearance in back to back Superbowl’s, he asked his team, “Why not us?” Which soon became a team slogan used by many of the team’s fans.

Wilson and Disney were not born with magical powers. Neither was Michael Jordan, or Madonna, or even Steve Jobs. They easily, and often times let their imagination run wild. 

Do it today – let yourself IMAGINE. Tell the universe what you want and then, when you know what you want…get to work.

Are You Impeding Your Own Success

How did I go from being an impulsive go-getter to an over-analytical observer?

How did I become afraid of my own instincts?

Sometimes we are faced with a fork in the road and while each direction has it’s pros & cons, ultimately one is the best choice. But, how do I know the choice I’m making will be the best one?

“Successful people make decisions quickly (as soon as all the facts are available) and change them very slowly (if ever). Unsuccessful people make decisions very slowly, and change them often and quickly.” – Napoleon Hill, The Science of Getting Rich

When I asked a Facebook group this question, the responses I got were variations of the same thing, “Go with your gut.” Going with your gut implies a predisposition or a sixth sense, or intuition even… often times “going with your gut” means to carry out an action based on instinct. However, in order to take action – we also need faith.

How do you make decisions? Careful analysis of options? Discussion? Guidance from a mentor? Instinct?

Q: What happens when you doubt your instincts? 

A: We lose faith.

When I was young I was impulsive. I would leave a job before I even had another job to go to. I believed in the notion that everything would work out. Which, I learned later, was actually a clever disguise for the confidence I had in my grandparents, rather than an actual faith in myself. They always provided where I fell short. But I never hesitated to make a decision because I knew would help me if the decision I made turned out to be the wrong one. So I say again, faith. We impede our success when we lose faith in our ability to change or adapt any decision we make.

I spend more time weighing the options that eventually a decision is made for me by outside circumstances. I get angry with myself when I’m at the point of analysis paralysis.  Doubt creates a lack of faith and when no faith exists we don’t believe we can adapt.
